The architecture of the Cook County Courthouse openly embraces a neoclassical style, featuring aspects of symmetry, simplicity, and an overall sense of grandeur. In consideration of its large size, its construction began in 1928 and was impressively completed in just the following year under Hall, Lawrence, and Ratcliffe Inc. Its exterior is built with Indiana Limestone, while the interior is comprised of a combination of marble, oak, and plaster. The sheer magnitude and detail of the courthouse exhibits a sense of authority and importance, and it adopts certain elements found in ancient Graeco-Roman structures to accentuate themes of justice, power, and severity.
