Century Tower was commissioned by the Trustees System Service, a bank that specialized in giving small business loans to Midwestern farmers. Originally, the bank was based in Alabama. In 1929, however, they decided to move their headquarters from Alabama to Chicago. Shortly after, however, the company was greatly affected by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. After declaring bankruptcy, the company was indicted by the United States Postal Service for fraud. The failure of the Trustees System Service as well as other banks in the area led investors to riot along Lake Street.
