Recording In-Person Classes Using Panopto

  • For classes that you know in advance that you'd like to record, we can schedule your room's Panopto lecture capture system to record the dates and times to a Panopto folder of your choosing. We usually need 3-5 days advance notice in order to schedule recordings.

  • To request class recordings please fill out the following Lecture Capture Request Form Links to an external site..

To create a Panopto folder in your Canvas course, follow these instructions to Activate and Download Panopto.

  • Once your recordings are scheduled and you are in the classroom:

    • Turn on the technology with the touch panel and send any device content that you want captured to the projector or display.
    • Make sure that you are wearing a microphone with a full battery that is turned on and unmuted. (Microphone is stored in the black drawer in the podium.)
    • Use the touch panel controls (under the button that looks like a Zoom camera) to point the camera at what you would like to capture. The small confidence monitor will indicate what sound and video is reaching the recorder and indicate when it is actively recording.

Once the lecture is captured and in your chosen folder, you can edit out any parts that you don't want shared.

If you would like to hide videos until you have had a chance to edit or approve, see instruction to Change Viewing Permissions.

    Confidence monitors

A confidence monitor has been installed in each camera/microphone equipped classroom so that instructors who are using Panopto to record their lectures can see where the camera is pointing and whether their content and microphone signal are getting to the recorder properly.

The presence of this monitor does not mean that your class is being recorded. There is an indicator on the monitor that says "ready" when the system is not recording, and "recording" when it is recording.

If the class before yours has a recurring recording scheduled to end when your class begins you may see the end of their recording session while you are preparing for your class. It should end by the time your class begins.

If you do not want to see yourself in the monitor while you teach, please feel free to turn the small confidence monitor off using its power button during your lecture.

If your classes are not being recorded, the only people who might view your classroom remotely are Panopto administrators checking to make sure that the hardware is working properly.  No one can hear audio from Panopto recorders remotely until content is recorded and played back later.
