The statue's facial features are inspired by Ancient Greek statues, with styled curls and a straight nose (see images 1 and 2 for a comparison with Alexander the Great). The partial nudity of the statue also follows the Greco-Roman tradition of heroic nudity, displaying the "ideal" male form. The cloak that partially covers the statue is reminiscent of an Ancient Greek chlamys or an Ancient Roman sagum. The eagle that stands on the statue's right leg also draws on Greco-Roman motifs. The eagle is a bird strongly associated with Zeus, as both his messenger and a sign of victory. This association traces back to Ancient Greece, but was also used by the Ancient Roman emperors as a symbol of imperial rule, and the Roman legions as a standard. (See a reconstructed aquila below in image 4, a standard of the Roman legions, and an original 2nd century CE Roman eagle in image 5). It was then adopted as a Germanic symbol from the Medieval period onward (see image 6 for an example of a early German eagle from ca. 1250). The figure’s pose, with one raised leg, also recalls several ancient Greek and Roman statues, including the Cincinnatus Jason, from ca. 100-200 CE (see image 7). The pose does not directly reflect these ancient poses, however, as it is purely aesthetic and does not facilitate any specific action. In contrast he ancient raised-leg poses are all used for a purpose. The Cincinnatus Jason, for example, is either tying or untying his sandal.
