The statue is in the Neoclassical style, and draws from Greco-Roman statue styles and symbolism. It is cast in bronze with a stone base. The use of bronze is reminiscent of Ancient Greek bronze statuary, most of which has been lost or destroyed. At the time of the statue's creation, the choice of this material was both praised and criticized for its durability. One critic said "bronze is sometimes too durable." Another said, however, "Chicago art lovers who admired the graceful lines of the youthful figure of the creator of Faust when the cast was exhibited at the Art Institute in 1910 will be delighted with the finished product in enduring bronze.”

The bench that stands behind the statue is also Neoclassical. It follows the lines of Greco-Roman architecture, with the backing shaped in a peak reminiscent of temple roofs. A portrait relief of Goethe's face and inscriptions from Faust are placed under the peak, where the pediment would be placed on a Greco-Roman temple. The bench itself is supported by simple legs designed like the top of Ionic columns.
