Recording In-Person Classes
The Northwestern IT AV team has installed cameras, microphones, and recording hardware into 68 general-purpose classrooms.
The General Purpose Classroom Directory page on the Office of the Registrar website is a helpful resource that can quickly notify you whether the room is enabled for lecture capture or if additional equipment is needed to be brought in to enable it. Use the drop-down menus to find the room and check for "Lecture Capture" in the Features column.
If you are scheduled to use a lecture capture and want advance training, you can request it here: https://bit.ly/3E67Xfn Links to an external site.. Please check Northwestern's Policy on Recording Classes from the Office of the Provost prior to making your first class recording.
In these rooms, we can support the following options to record your in-person classes: [Note: These options can be used separately or at the same time. Panopto will record Zoom sessions if you wish to videoconference in your classroom at the same time.]
Panopto
For classes that you know in advance that you'd like to record, we can schedule your room's Panopto lecture capture system to automatically record the dates and times to a Panopto folder of your choosing. We usually need 3-5 days' advance notice in order to schedule Panopto recordings. With this option, you do not need to be concerned about starting and stopping recordings, you will just make sure that the audio/video you want to be captured is being captured by checking the monitor in room for camera and turning power on for the microphone and verifying the batteries are charged for microphone. Please check the specific classroom documentation for AV use in room, as classrooms may have variables for in-room AV devices.
- Requests for scheduled class recording can be made here: https://bit.ly/2Vv73Yf Links to an external site. (3-5 day advanced notice required - you can employ the Zoom instructions below if waiting for the scheduled service to commence).
- Visit these sites for more information on navigating Panopto and what to do in classrooms to record with Panopto.
Zoom
For last-minute or hybrid class recordings, you can use Zoom in camera/mic-equipped classrooms. With this option you would log in, schedule, and initiate Zoom sessions on a computer/device, connect it to the podium equipment, and manage Zoom's content sharing, recording, camera/microphone selection, participants, etc.

Classroom Recording Equipment
There are a limited number of mobile Zoom carts available for use in classrooms that are not equipped with built-in recording equipment. To request a Zoom cart, contact smartcls@northwestern.edu.
A limited number of portable Panopto kits are available to check out from the main circulation desk at the University Library (Evanston campus). Each kit includes everything needed to produce a Panopto recording for either PC or Mac, as well as a helpful guide to get you started. All you need to make them work is a single available USB port on your machine and a valid Wildcard for a three-day loan.
