Types of Questions
There are several different types of questions. Select from the drop down menu to choose the desired type.
These questions are self-grading:
- Multiple Choice
- True/False
- Fill in the Blank
- Fill in Multiple Blanks
- Multiple Answers
- Matching
These questions have to be graded by the instructor:
- Essay Question
- File Upload
As you build the questions, select the correct answer for all question types except essay question, file upload, and text entry. This allows Canvas to automatically grade all other question types. In the following page, you'll see how quizzes can be set to provide students feedback during or after the quiz.

Build in Feedback to Students
The Importance of Timely Feedback
Providing timely and meaningful feedback can greatly impact student learning and engagement. Aim to deliver feedback within two to fifteen workdays of a topic or assessment to ensure it remains relevant and supports the learning process.
Using Automated Feedback in Canvas Quizzes
Canvas Quizzes offers automated feedback options that allow students to receive immediate responses to their answers. Here’s how to use these features effectively:
-
-
- Comments for Correct Answers: Reinforce correct responses with encouraging feedback, such as “Correct!” or “Great job—this is exactly right!”
- Guidance for Incorrect Answers: For incorrect choices, add specific comments to guide students toward resources that explain the concept, such as “Review Chapter 1 to better understand this distinction.”
-
Example: In the feedback for a quiz question, a correct answer might receive the comment, “Correct!” while an incorrect answer prompts students to “Review Chapter 1 in this week’s reading for more clarity on this concept.”
Tips for Effective Feedback
- Be Specific: Link incorrect answers to specific resources, readings, or sections for targeted guidance.
- Encourage Reflection: Prompt students to revisit materials, helping them understand their mistakes and reinforcing learning.
- Maintain Positivity: Use encouraging language for correct answers to boost student confidence.
Ensure students can view feedback
Students may miss valuable feedback, comments, and annotations if they aren’t aware of where to find them. Inform your students that feedback is available and share the following links to guide them:
- How do I view annotation feedback comments from my instructor? (Links to an external site.)
- How do I view rubric results for my assignment?
Organizing your Quiz Questions
While quizzes can be a simple list of questions, there are additional ways to organize them for added functionality, like randomization.
1. Question Groups
Creating a Question Group allows Canvas to randomly select questions from a pool, giving each student a unique quiz experience. After creating a question group within a quiz, you can:
-
-
- Drag and Drop Questions: Add individual questions directly into the group.
- Pull from

2. Question Banks
Question Banks enable instructors to organize questions by topic, unit, or other criteria, making it easy to create comprehensive assessments like midterms or final exams. By setting up question banks, you can pull questions from across your course into a single quiz.

3. Question Titles
When building quiz questions, using titles can simplify quiz creation and navigation within question banks. Titles help instructors quickly identify questions by type and topic. For example, naming a question "Ch. 1 - MC" indicates a multiple-choice question from Chapter 1, aiding in the organization of exams.
