Setting up a Quiz
Before Creating a Quiz
Before you begin to create your quiz in Canvas, it is a good idea to have the questions in a digital format. There are several ways instructors can import questions from publishers or even Word documents into a Canvas quiz. If instructors can't import the questions, they can cut and paste from a document.
Remember, instructors can use ungraded and practice quizzes to help prepare students or check understanding.
Steps to Create a Quiz
STEP 1: Click on the Quiz link on the left navigation panel.
STEP 2: Click on the +Quiz button on the right side of the page.
STEP 3: Enter a Quiz name in the details tab. You can add your directions in the RCE box, as you did when you created and assignment.
Quiz Settings
There are several suggested options to ensure the security of your quiz.
- Shuffle Answers: The questions will stay in the same order but the options in multiple choice questions will be shuffled [NOTE: Avoid options like "All of the above" or "Both A & B" when using Shuffle Answers].
- Time Limit: This is how long students have to complete the quiz after they initiate it. If you have students who need accommodations, you can add extra time to individual in the Moderate Quiz function.
- Allow Multiple Attempts: If you leave this unchecked students cannot retake the quiz. If a student loses internet access while taking the quiz, you may need to provide them with extra attempts via the Moderate Quiz function.
- Let Students See Their Quiz Responses: If you leave this unchecked students will not know the correct answers, only the final score. Learn more in following pages about advantages and disadvantages to using this feature.
- Show One Question at a Time: If you prefer, you can check this so students will not be able to view the whole quiz or exam in one window.
As with other assignments, you can set the due date and restrict access by dates.
Once you have given the instructions for the quiz and selected your preferred settings, it's time to add questions to the quiz.
