Grading and Feedback in Quizzes

Grading Quizzes

Canvas will automatically grade quiz questions that have correct answers identified. Instructors should access the quiz submissions in Speedgrader to grade any open response or essay questions. In Speedgrader, any questions Canvas has already graded will have points pre-filled, and the items that need manual grading will be empty. You can enter the points awarded for the student submission and easily write additional comments without leaving the Speedgrader window.

Don't forget to click on the blue Update Scores button (2) after making grading changes! Use the Fudge Points field Links to an external site. to add or subtract additional points to a student submission.

Giving Feedback

Grading and giving feedback to your students is crucial to their learning process. When writing Quiz Questions in Canvas, click on the three dot box near each answer to pre-set feedback.

You can also tailor when students see the correct answers. 

1. When you have only Let Students See Their Quiz Responses selected, the incorrect answers are shown immediately after students finish the quiz.
2. Checking Only Once After Each Attempt allows students to only view results immediately after completing the quiz.
3. Checking Let Students See the Correct Answers shows students the correct quiz answers after completing the quiz. This setting enables a green Correct tab on every correct answer for the entire quiz. Quizzes default to this option, so if you do not want students to see the correct answers, deselect the checkbox.

When students can see correct answers, Canvas puts a banner indicating Correct/Incorrect status of the question. Any pre-set feedback you have written will be show next to their answer.

NOTE: If the quiz is set to a Manual grade posting policy in the gradebook, these feedback options will not be enforced and the student will not see their responses or correct answers until the instructor posts grades for that quiz.
