Assignment Groups and Weighted Grades

Best Practices for Assignment Groups

If an instructor has a lot of assignments, it can make more sense for students and instructors to have the assignments organized into groups such as labs, homework, or exams. Using groups can:

  • Assist students in finding assignments.
  • Help student and instructors understand grades and performance within a group.

Creating Assignment Groups

Instructors can weight final grades through the use of assignment groups. After creating assignment groups and organizing all graded items into their appropriate group, instructors can then assign a weight to each group (not the assignments themselves).

If one assignment is worth a certain percentage of a grade (e.g. class participation or a final exam), instructors should create a group for just that one assignment.

STEP 1: Click on the +Groups button under assignments

STEP 2: Name the new Group. If the instructor wants to weight the grades, they will need to enable that in the next step.

STEP 3: Click on the three dots to bring up the Assignment Group Weights option.

STEP 4: Use the Assignment Groups Weight dialog box to assign the weight to each group.
