Speed Grader
SpeedGrader makes it easy to evaluate individual student assignments and group assignments quickly. SpeedGrader displays assignment submissions for active students in your course. You can access SpeedGrader through: Assignments, Quizzes, Graded Discussions, and the Gradebook.
- You can access it from an Assignment, Discussion or Quiz. On the main preview page, SpeedGrader appears in the right hand of the screen under the title "Related Items."
2. You can also access it from within the Gradebook. Click on the three vertical dots next to the name of an assignment and select SpeedGrader from the dropdown menu.
The SpeedGrader Page
For each student, SpeedGrader has five areas:
- View student submissions (text entries, website URLs, media recordings, and/or file uploads); preview supported file types in Canvas DocViewer; review other file format submissions using the document previewer or Google Preview
- Assign a grade based on your preferred assessment method (points or percentage)
- View Rubric to assist with grading (if one is added to the assignment)
- View comments created by you or the student about the assignment
- Create text, video, and/or audio commentary for the student
When you open an assignment in SpeedGrader, the Word, or PDF file will appear on the left. You can use the panel on the right to grade the assignment with or without a rubric. You can also enter comments in the comments box. The icons below the comment box allow you to attach a document, record a video, or record an audio file.
NOTE: The grade and comments will not be immediately visible to the student ONLY if you have the assignment set to MANUAL grading.
SpeedGrader Menu Icons
In the upper left-hand corner, three icons help you navigate and manage SpeedGrader options.
- To return to the Gradebook, click the Gradebook icon.
- To post or hide the assignment, click the Visibility icon.
- To view SpeedGrader settings, click the Settings icon. SpeedGrader settings include:
- Options [4], which allows you to select student list sorting options Links to an external site. and enable anonymous grading Links to an external site..
- Keyboard Shortcuts [5], which opens a list of keyboard shortcuts for SpeedGrader. You can also press the Shift+Question Mark keys simultaneously.
- Help [6], which opens the Canvas Help menu.
View Assignment Details
The center of the menu bar includes assignment information and overall grading information. Assignment information includes the name of the assignment [1], assignment due date [2], and the name of the course [3].
To view the assignment details, click the name of the assignment. The assignment details page also lets you download all student submissions Links to an external site. for the assignment.
Grading information includes assignment statistics, including the number of assignments that have been graded out of the total number of students in the course [4] and the average score and percentage [5]. You can use this information to keep track of your grading progress.
View Student List
The right side of the menu bar includes the student list for the assignment. SpeedGrader opens the assignment for the first student listed in the student list, arranged alphabetically by last name. The student list also displays the status of each student's submission. You can also use the student list to find student submissions Links to an external site.. After completing grading of one submission, you can view the next student's submission by clicking the arrow button next to the student list.
View Sidebar
The SpeedGrader sidebar provides all the submission details for the student shown in the student list. However, submission details are not shown when an assignment is graded anonymously.
View the submission details Links to an external site. [1], including as the date and time of the submission; if an assignment was resubmitted, you can view previous versions of the submission.
You can also download the submission file by clicking the link [2].
Complete the assessment of the submission by entering a grade Links to an external site. or using a rubric for grading Links to an external site., if available [3].
Leave assignment feedback comments Links to an external site. for the student in the comments section [4]. Assignment comments also display as a new thread in Conversations Links to an external site..
