What Is This Canvas Site About?

This site has been designed for those providing instruction in how to use library resources and teaching research skills. The site contains content in the form of stand-alone items up to entire modules that can be used for instruction. These items offer flexibility for the instructor and can be used in “one-shot” instruction sessions or over a more extended schedule. This site was designed to house all library orientation and research skill instructional material under one roof, thus eliminating the need to search in multiple locations.

How Is This Site Organized?

This site is not a course intended to be completed from beginning to end, but serves as a repository of materials that address student learning needs related to identifying, evaluating, and using information resources efficiently, effectively, and ethically.

Learning materials in this course repository are organized using a simplified outline for the information-research process :

Each step of the research process, and learning resources related to it, are identified with a colored icon as shown above.

How to Get Started?

We recommend working in partnership with your liaison/subject librarian to review your course assignment(s) while considering the following:

What experience do your students have with the research process?
What experience do your students have with using the NU Libraries (whether in-person or virtually)?
What skills, concepts, or resources related to the research process will be important for students to do or understand in order to do well on your course assignment(s)?

With that in mind, review site resources relevant to the skills/concepts important to your students' success on your assignment(s).

Discuss with your liaison librarian, or consider, how to integrate these learning materials into the students' process for completing your course assignment(s). For example:

- Can relevant resources be integrated into course activities that prepare students to complete project proposals or assignments?
- Invite your liaison librarian to meet with your students to introduce, practice, and answer questions about one or more of these skills or concepts. Librarians often create course-specific research guides to highlight resources relevant to assignments. You may also use this instruction request form.
- Work with your liaison librarian to structure asynchronous learning activities for students to complete in preparation for their independent work on course assignment(s)
- NOTE: Any internal Canvas Quizzes included in these instructional materials are provided to check student understanding of concepts and resources. Scores can be set to zero and need not impinge on course grading schemes.

Modules and pages in this course can be exported from this repository and added to your Canvas course site (Sharing Canvas Content.pdf). Many resources, such as videos, can be linked directly into your course.
