Weighted Grades and Assignment Exceptions

Instructors can weight final grades through the use of assignment groups. After creating assignment groups and organizing all graded items into their appropriate group, instructors can then assign a weight to each group (not the assignments themselves).

If one assignment is worth a certain percentage of a grade (e.g. class participation or a final exam), instructors should create a group for just that one assignment.

Assignment Rules & Exceptions (e.g. dropping low scores)

Canvas allows instructors to create exceptions for dropping scores. These exceptions include dropping either high or low scores, and also allow instructors to create exceptions to their rules (e.g. "Drop the lowest quiz score except Quiz #10.)

Rules and exceptions require the use of assignment groups in most cases.

NOTE: In the assignments area of Canvas, there is a default assignment group called Assignments that all new assignments are added to. When making new assignment groups, instructors can either edit the name of the default Assignments group, or remove it once it no longer has any assignments in it.
