Northwestern is currently engaged in a multi-phase initiative to update the University’s online systems so that students, faculty and staff (including temporary staff) will be better able to manage how their personal information in university systems (e.g., “display name” and their pronouns) are displayed to provide consistency across systems.

Here's what you need to know for Canvas:

The self-selection of pronouns in Canvas has been disabled.
Updates to your name and pronoun information for university systems, including Canvas, occurs exclusively in NUValidate.
- Once logged into NUValidate, click the button on the homepage to Edit Online Directory Information to update your display name or pronouns.
- Note: once the name or pronoun update is saved in NUValidate, it will appear in Canvas no more than 24 hours later. If the pronouns shown in Canvas are not updated 24 hours later, please contact consultant@northwestern.edu for further assistance.
