Ungraded Surveys and Practice Quizzes in New Quizzes
New quizzes does not have built-in features for administering ungraded surveys and practices quizzes. However, instructors can create this functionality through two alternate paths:
Using New Quizzes to Create Surveys and Ungraded Quizzes
Any New Quiz administered in Canvas will generate an item in the Canvas course gradebook. However, through management of the quiz and gradebook settings, the impact of that gradebook item can be mitigated to ensure the survey or practice quiz does not impact course grades. Enable the following settings to make the quiz function as an ungraded survey or practice quiz:
- Set quiz points to 0 when creating quiz (on the quiz settings page)
- Check the box to not count the assignment toward the final grade
- Create an Assignment group that is worth 0% of the course grade and place all surveys in that assignment group (if you have enabled a Grading Scheme Links to an external site. in your course)

When creating a practice quiz, the student visibility settings will be critical to ensure the quiz functions as expected. A New Quizzes Settings page with more information on this topic is forthcoming.
Qualtrics and SurveyNU
Instructors who are familiar with the Qualtrics survey platform can create a survey and integrate it in their Canvas site using SurveyNU. SurveyNUI provides students the ability to take a survey without leaving Canvas. Note that SurveyNU requires the survey to be created in Qualtrics and all survey data review and analysis will happen in Qualtrics.
To add SurveyNU to a Canvas course, instructors will use the Northwestern Learning Apps Store. Once added to a course, the SurveyNU app will walk the instructor through the setup steps to add the existing survey to the Canvas course. Instructors may add additional surveys to the course by installing SurveyNU again from the NU Learning Apps Store - each survey needs its own installation of SurveyNU.
When completing the installation of SurveyNU in the NU Learning Apps Store, instructors are given the option to collect student identification information in the survey responses, such as student name and email address. The SurveyNU installation process will provide guidance on how to configure the survey in Qualtrics to obtain this data.
