Overview of Assignments and Grading
Before you start creating assignments in Canvas, consider the following:
- What is your course grading scheme (i.e. grading scale)?
- What categories/type of assignments are you going to use (papers, discussions, problem sets)?
- Will assignments in your course be weighted? What percentage will be assign to each category (i.e. Quizzes 50%, Presentations 20% and Final 30%)?
- What is the total point value for your course, and how much is each assignment worth?
Ungraded Assignments and Quizzes
It's important to note that, although most assessments are graded, you can also have ungraded assessments in Canvas. Why would you do that? Ungraded quizzes (often short) given students a chance to test their knowledge in a low-stakes environment.
Don't Forget Due Dates
It's important to use due dates on your assignments. Each time you add a due date, that assignment will automatically appear in the calendar, the syllabus page, and students will also receive alerts through their Canvas notifications. If you need to change a due date during the semester, it will be automatically updated in each of those locations.
