Miro

Miro Links to an external site. is a collaborative white boarding tool and online workspace that enables teams to collaborate and build on the platform’s digital canvas to conduct meetings, design products, and brainstorm ideas.

Miro is currently being piloted by Northwestern IT Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic years. 

 


Requesting a Miro Account and Signing In

Accessing a Miro pilot account

Instructors interested in using Miro in their courses can request a license as part of Northwestern's pilot. Contact canvas@northwestern.edu to be provided an individual account.

To request licenses for an entire class or a group of students, provide a list of Northwestern email addresses and accounts will be provided if available.  

PLEASE NOTE: There is no difference in account type for instructors and students.  

Signing in

Once an account has been created, sign in to Miro.com Links to an external site. by selecting SSO, entering your Northwestern email, and complete the multi-factor authentication process using DUO.

Organization

Miro organizes users and boards through Teams, Spaces, and Sections. Access these areas through the dashboard.

Teams: The top level in Miro. All pilot participants will be added to the main Northwestern University Team. Participants can create and share boards from within this top-level team. Teams can only be created by Northwestern IT. Contact canvas@northwestern.edu to request the creation of a team.

Spaces: A folder create to organize and permission boards. An instructor can create a space for their class, invite their students to the space, and create boards within the space. 

Sections: Folders within a space. Sections are ideal for projects within a single course. NOTE: Boards within any section of a space are visible to all people in the associated space.

Canvas

Miro does not have a direct integration with Canvas. To share a Miro board with your course, you can link to a Miro board directly using the share button on a board. Miro also allows for the embedding of boards Links to an external site.

Accessibility Information

Accessibility issues with Miro will primarily affect students and instructors with low vision, blindness, or color blindness, and students using keyboard support. People using screen readers will face the most significant barriers. People with low vision or color blindness, and people using only a keyboard could still reasonably be expected to use the service, though there are certain barriers they should be made aware of, and alternate means of participating should be an option.
