Manage Your Gradebook

Gradebook Overview

When an instructor creates a graded assignment, discussion, or quiz, a corresponding column will appear in the Grades area of Canvas. This area allows instructors to view submissions, enter scores, calculate final grades, and offer feedback to students.

Grade Posting Policy

Instructors can now easily control grade visibility (formerly known as muting assignments) by setting a course-wide grade posting policy for the gradebook or by setting posting policies on a per-assignment basis. The manual grade posting policy maintains the previous muting functionality and provides more flexibility for instructors to post grades for everyone, for graded assignments only, or by section.

Grade Details Tray & SpeedGrader Access

The Grade Detail Tray allows instructors to view and enter grades, submission status, and comments for a given student. The Grade Detail Tray also provides access to SpeedGrader, which is no longer available in an assignment's drop-down menu in the gradebook.

Late & Missing Work

The updated gradebook allows instructors to set grading rules for late and missing submissions. These include automatic deductions or setting a default grade for past-due submissions.

Gradebook Filtering and Organization

Canvas offers a number of search and filter functions to find specific information in your course gradebook. As of Spring 2022, there is a new enhanced filter option that is enabled in courses to allow filters to be saved for repeated use.

Downloading & Uploading Grades

Instructors wishing to work offline can download the gradebook as a spreadsheet. If they choose to change grades or add columns, they can also re-upload their changes to Canvas.

"Treat ungraded as zero" is no longer a feature in the updated gradebook

The gradebook no longer offers a feature that allows instructors to "treat ungraded as zero." Please review the late and missing work policies to learn more.
