Extended Time Accommodations in Classic Quizzes

When administering a quiz or exam in Canvas, you can adjust the quiz settings to allow for students with extended time accommodations (as approved by Accessible NU) to receive their appropriate testing time - you do not need to create a separate quiz just for students with time accommodations.

When adding testing accommodations, be sure to update your Canvas quiz in the TWO places where timing adjustments must be made:

Quiz Moderation (adds additional time to a student’s quiz attempt)

    • Once the quiz has been published, go to the main settings page for the quiz. In the upper right corner, click on “Moderate This Quiz”.
    • Within the quiz moderation page, find the student who is eligible for extended time. Select the pencil icon to edit the student’s settings on the exam and indicate the ADDITIONAL time the student should receive (not the total testing time) to meet the student’s accommodation and click save. You can also add additional attempts to individual students in the Moderation area.

Availability Window (makes the assessment available long enough for the student to use their time)

    • On the quiz settings page, select Edit (top of page)
    • At the bottom of the quiz settings is the “Assign” area – click “+ Add” to create an additional assignment for the quiz.
    • Type the student's name in the "Assign to" box and select the student who will be testing in this modified window. You can add multiple students to the same window as long as they are all eligible for the same availability window.
    • Adjust the availability window and/or deadline to ensure the student(s) with accommodation will have access to the quiz for the full length of their testing time.

If your quiz window is longer than the longest approved time accommodation (for example, you provide a window of one hour in which students can take their 15 minute quiz), you do not need to add an additional availability window for extended time testers since all students can test in the provided testing window, even those with extended time. You may wish to check in with your students who have extended time accommodations to ensure that they are available to test in the provided testing window.

These settings must be adjusted for each quiz/exam in Canvas.
