Calendar and Using Scheduler for Appointments

Canvas provides two scheduling tools to help instructors and students manage dates and appointments across Canvas courses.

Calendar provides a daily, weekly, and monthly view of all items that include a scheduled date, including graded assignments and events. Scheduler allows instructors the option to create appointment groups for student sign-up.

Calendar Overview

Canvas's Calendar provides quick access to the important events that are coming up in a course. When deciding what to put on the calendar, most instructors include graded Assignments with specific due dates, but not necessarily every upcoming event, such as the topic of a class lecture. Overloading a calendar will make it less effective as a tool.

Instructors may drag & drop a calendar items to change a due date, automatically sending an announcement out to the entire class, notifying students of the change.

NOTE: Most Calendar items will appear after instructors create assignments with due dates in their Canvas courses. It is not common practice to create assignment placeholders on the Calendar first. For non-assignment place holders like guest speakers, use the event option in the Calendar and be sure to select the corresponding course.

Editing Dates in Canvas

Calendar automatically syncs with other features in Canvas, such as Assignments, Syllabus, and Grades. If you create or change the due date of an Assignment on the Calendar, it will change in all the other locations and vice versa.

Scheduler

The Scheduler tool allows instructors to create appointment groups. Appointment groups create a block of time where students can sign-up to meet with the instructor. Scheduler is available in the Calendar area of Canvas.

Use the Scheduler to:

  • Create office hours
  • Schedule TA sessions
  • Assign presentation times
