Sections in CAESAR and Canvas

Courses are created in Canvas by a daily sync, or feed, from CAESAR. If a course has multiple sections, each individual section will automatically have its own course site.

Each section’s course site in Canvas contains the student enrollments and the instructor(s) of record listed in CAESAR, along with its own areas for content, assignments, and grades.

Instructors can request for some or all sections of a course to be combined into one site in Canvas. This can include sections taught by one instructor, or several sections with different instructors.

Discussion Sections

Discussion sections of an individual course or course section are not created within Canvas. Instructors or TAs are able to manually create discussion sections in a Canvas course site by manually creating Canvas sections or Groups. Instructors can also request that course sites be created for each discussion section by emailing a request to consultant@northwestern.edu.

PLEASE NOTE: For Spring Quarter 2020, discussion sections of an individual course have also been added to Canvas to accommodate increased requests.
