Assigning Peer Reviews

Assigning peer reviews enables students to review work submitted by their peers to Canvas. Instructors have the option to assign multiple reviews and to make reviewing anonymous.

Peer reviews allow instructors to either manually or auto-assign peer reviews with Canvas:

Anonymity of both students

While anonymous peer reviews hide the identity of the reviewer, the student submitting their assignment should exclude their name if the reviewee is to be anonymous to the reviewer as well. In these situations, instructors will still know which student submitted and which student completed the review.

Avoid Group Peer Review

There are known issues with adding peer reviews to group assignments in Canvas. It is recommended that you use other means in arranging group peer reviews. Discussion boards or instructor arranged sharing of work are two options.

Restrictions for students who have not submitted

Students cannot access the work they are to review in Canvas until they have completed their own submission. If instructors wish to bypass this, students who have not submitted their work may access their peer review from the notifications email sent by Canvas after an instructor assigns peer reviews. If this is not ideal, instructors should not assign a student a peer review until they have submitted their assignment, or they should have Canvas automatically assign peer reviews.
