Crowd Mics In-Person Moderator Instructions

Crowd Mics allows participants to speak, text, and vote in class directly from their phone. Read more about the platform here: https://crowdmics.com/ Links to an external site.

Getting to the moderator interface on a computer:

Note: If you are moderating from a remote location, make sure that your computer is connected to the Northwestern Global Connect VPN first

Proceed through the security warning by clicking on “advanced” and then proceed to the IP address.

Starting and moderating events:

Log in can be anything - enter what you’d like to be called for this class and click “log in.“

Don’t worry about setting up wifi  - it is not necessary

If an event was left live from a previous class, you’ll have to end the current event before creating your own (see ending your event below)

Click on the “create event” button and then the “create a new local event” button

Call the event something that participants can identify as your event.

Click on “start event” without setting a pin - this way if you forget to end your event, somebody can end your event before beginning theirs in the same room. If you do enter a pin, please be sure to end your event before leaving the room (see below). Please use pin 0000 if necessary.

Moderators can enable "auto approve" so that they do not have to approve all requests to speak through crowd mic or turn off “auto approve” so that they can select speakers from the list of people asking to speak.

If auto approve is on, students will be notified when they are at the front of the queue to speak. A 10-second countdown timer on the student’s phone then begins to count down until they speak or it skips to the next person in the queue.

You may want to have each in-person student test their phone setup on the first class occasion.

Ending your event:

When your class/event is over, please make sure you are in the event and click the circled X in the upper right corner to end the event and affirm that you want to end the event.

Click on the open door with an arrow at the upper left to log out so that the next person can log themselves in.

Moderating via an iPhone:

To moderate via an iPhone on the Eduroam wifi network:

Download the “CM moderator” app (only available for iPhone) from the apple store
