USE CASE - Draft essay that requires Turnitin

Use Case Name: Draft Essay Using Turnitin

Situation:

An instructor has an assignment that requires both a first draft and a final draft, with Turnitin enabled for plagiarism checking.

Background

If a student’s first draft is stored in the institutional repository, Turnitin may flag the final draft as plagiarized, since it will recognize the initial submission. To avoid this, the draft assignment should be set up, so it does not save the paper in the repository.

Solution

Create Two Separate Assignments

  • Draft Assignment: Create a separate assignment for the first draft.
  • Final Assignment: Create another assignment for the final draft.

This approach allows the instructor to assign unique due dates and specific Turnitin settings for each version, keeping the process organized and reducing potential plagiarism issues.

Setting Up Turnitin for Draft Submission

In the Draft Assignment:

  • Go to the Turnitin Settings.
  • Under Store Submissions In, select Do Not Store the Submitted Paper.

By choosing this option, the draft will not be saved in Turnitin’s repository, preventing it from being flagged as a duplicate when the final draft is submitted.

For the Final Submission

Change the Turnitin submission setting in the final draft to "Institutional paper repository" for the dropdown menu for "Store Submissions in."
