What is an assignment?

Most of the time, an instructor will create an assignments that asks students to submit a document or file. There are multiple submission types accepted by Canvas, and instructors can assign due dates and points, and include detailed instructions. Unlike discussions, only the instructor sees the student submission when using assignments.

Assignments that don't require a submission can also be created.

Examples of Submitted Assignments

• Student submits a paper or presentation file
• Student submits an audio or video file
• These previous formats can also be uploaded as submissions for group assignments

Examples of Unsubmitted Assignments

• Instructor creates an assignment to represent participation in class discussions.
• Instructor creates an assignment for attendance.
