Getting Started
This first module introduces the basics of Zoom meetings, just enough for you to successfully hold and manage a Zoom class meeting. (Helpful hints are noted in callouts.) Throughout, you will find links that will take you to additional information and a more thorough explanation about how to do something.
What is Zoom?
Zoom is a cloud-based web conferencing tool that supports high-resolution video and content sharing on any device. The tool allows you to set up virtual video and audio conferencing, live chats, webinars, screen-sharing, and other collaborative capabilities.
Downloading Zoom
To use Zoom, you need to install the "client" software onto your computer. To install the software, you need a valid NetID, NetID password, and Northwestern email address (to access Zoom through Northwestern). Download the Zoom client Links to an external site. (and update it periodically).
After downloading and installing the software, launch it on your computer.
You will see a Sign In window that looks like this. Click Sign in with SSO.
Enter northwestern in the Your company domain field, then click Continue.
Your web browser will open automatically to the Northwestern SSO authentication page. Enter your NetID and password, and log in.
Joining and Configuring Audio and Visual
When the Zoom screen loads, by default, your video is disabled and audio is muted, meaning that no one can see or hear you. Controls are located in the bottom left of your screen, as shown below. Click on each to enable those features.
You can also temporarily enable your microphone by pressing and holding the keyboard spacebar.
