Authenticated Users
Unless you anticipate inviting guest speakers from outside Northwestern University into your Zoom meetings, we recommend that meetings are set to allow only authenticated users. This means only users with Northwestern-affiliated email addresses may join the meeting.
Why is this recommended? It helps to reduce Zoom-bombing, where unauthorized users break into the Zoom room to cause harm or mischief. In addition, to lessen the likelihood of Zoom-bombing, instruct your students to never share their passcode with anyone who is not a member of your class. (If a Zoom bomb occurs, implement your disturbance plan, described below.) And consider turning off File Transfer in your account settings.
To join the meeting, users must be signed in to their Zoom account using their Northwestern NetID and NetID password.
Allowing only authenticated users to join a meeting can be enabled while scheduling the meeting, or you can edit an existing meeting to apply this setting. Under Meeting Options, check the box next to Only authenticated users can join.
