Overview
Zoom is a cloud-based web conferencing service that supports high-resolution video and content sharing on any device. Zoom is available to all Northwestern faculty, staff, and students on the left hand navigation of Canvas courses, or through northwestern.zoom.us Links to an external site..
Zoom provides:
- large meeting support for up to 300 concurrent participants
- high-quality recordings (including editable transcripts) of meetings stored in the cloud
- integration with both Canvas and Panopto, Northwestern's video management platform
Web Conferencing Best Practices
- It is recommended that all users, including hosts, join meetings from the Zoom client or app Links to an external site.; joining through a browser limits certain meeting features. These instructions walk through the login process.
- If using Zoom for office hours, use the waiting room Links to an external site. feature to ensure privacy.
- For student group meetings, it is recommended that students schedule their meetings directly in Zoom at https://northwestern.zoom.us/ Links to an external site..
- Join a test meeting Links to an external site. to test your wireless connection. If you use a wireless connection to access Zoom, it should be a strong connection.
- Allow attendees the choice to connect audio through either computer or phone. If you have a weaker internet connection, phone audio might be the better choice when joining the meeting. You may want to use headphones or a headset if you have any background noise.
- Attendees should mute themselves when they are not speaking or if someone is presenting. Hosts can select mute all Links to an external site. if there is any background noise causing a disruption.
