How to record

Recording Meetings

Meetings can be recorded in one of two ways:

1. Start the meeting and then click the record button in the bottom tool bar [RECOMMENDED]

The control bar at the bottom of Zoom has an option to record the meeting. Hosts can join their meeting, inform their participants the meeting will be recorded, and then click the record button. Select the option to Record to the cloud. The recording will then be available in your Zoom account.

From the Zoom tool bar, click the Record button and then select "Record on this Computer" or "Record to the Cloud."

2. Record the meetings automatically

The instructor or meeting host can check the "Record Meetings Automatically" box when scheduling the meeting. This means that any time the meeting is started, recording will commence (if a meeting is started multiple times, such as a recurring meeting or a personal meeting room, there will be multiple recordings).

PLEASE NOTE: "Enable join before host" setting is not recommend for meetings set to automatically record. In this case, the recording would begin if a student joins the meeting several minutes before the host. This could also lead to multiple short recordings if participants access the meeting link at different times.

Recordings in Canvas

Once a recording is available, it will appear in the Cloud Recordings tab within the Zoom tab in Canvas:

The Cloud Recordings tab is used to manage recordings in your Zoom account.

Students are required to enter their NetID to access the recording. Downloading of recordings has been disabled.

NOTE: Breakout room recordings by students will be stored locally on the device of the participant who initiated the recording.

Allow Participants to Record

By default, only the host or co-host can initiate a recording. If another participant would like to record, the host will need to provide permission to that participant during the meeting.

To allow a participant to record a session:

  1. Click on Manage Participants
  2. In the Participants panel, navigate to the name of the person you would like to allow to record
  3. Click on More next to their name
  4. Select the option to Allow Record.

For more on this topic, see: Local Recording on the Zoom Help Center Links to an external site.

Recording Breakout Sessions

Instructors should plan ahead with their students in the event breakout room sessions need to be recorded and shared with either the instructor or the class.

  • Breakout room sessions can be recorded in Zoom, but these recordings will not be stored as a cloud recording.
  • To record a breakout room the host is not in, a participant in that room needs recording permission.
  • The host can grant this permission during a meeting using the "Manage Participants" panel. Local recordings are stored on the computer of the participant who initiated them.

Recording of the main session during Breakout Room sessions

When the host leaves the main room to join a breakout room, the cloud recording of the main Zoom session will pause. When the host returns to the main room, the cloud recording will resume.

Hosts may wish to pause the recording during Breakout Room sessions to avoid unnecessary recording. Hosts can then resume the recording when the participants rejoin the main session.
